A typically problematic area for the man are enlarged breasts – also medically known as gynecomastia. Around 40% of the male population is affected by this condition. Gynecomastia involves a benign enlargement of the tissue of the male breast gland(s). This often occurs during puberty. Reasons for gynecomastia can be hormonal, side effects from rapid weight gain, the taking of known medicines (anabolic steroids), alcohol or drugs. There are two medical reasons for the enlargement of the male breast. Whilst gynecomastia is due to an enlargement of the gland tissue, lipomastia (pseudogynecomastia) is due to the amount of fatty tissue. The difference between gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia is important for both the analysis and treatment of the condition. In rare cases it is necessary to remove the gland tissue. Normally it is enough to remove fatty tissue using suction methods (liposuction). |
